Councillor in police probe gives up Tory role

- By CLAIRE HARRISON Nuneaton Reporter news@reachplc.com

A COUNCILLOR being investigated over an alleged assault has stood down from the Conservative group at Nuneaton Town Hall.

Tory HQ has announced that Cllr Rob Tromans has stood down from Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council while a police probe continues.

This is in relation to the fact that Mr Tromans, a former deputy Warwickshire Police and Crime Commissioner, is involved in an investigation into an alleged assault.

A Nuneaton Conservative Association spokesman said: “Rob Tromans is no longer a part of the Conservative group.

“Rob Tromans has stepped down pending the results of the police investigation.”

As a result of him stepping down from the group, Cllr Tromans will become an independent councillor.

The investigation is in connection with an alleged assault in the Justice Walk car park on Thursday, March 22.

It has been stressed that he has not been charged or arrested for the alleged offence and he presented himself to police to be interviewed.

Due to any potential conflict of interest, Warwickshire Police has asked neighbouring force, Staffordshire Police, to conduct the investigation, which is ongoing.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “We were asked by Warwickshire Police to investigate a report of an assault on Thursday 22 March in Justice Walk Car Park in Nuneaton.

“A 49-year-old man from Nuneaton has been

voluntarily interviewed as part of the investigation. As the investigation is currently ongoing, it is inappropriate for us to comment further.”

Only last Thursday (May 3) he was re-elected as the Tory councillor for St Nicolas ward, polling 1,392 votes.

Now he will be the only independent to sit at the Town Hall when the first full council meets on

Wednesday following the local elections.

Having been appointed as the deputy to Philip Seccombe, Warwickshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner in July last year, he went on to serve nine months.

Then, last month, he resigned from the position, citing ‘personal reasons’ but did not make any public comment on the situation.
