Darts and domino league under threat after 54 years

- By CLAIRE HARRISON Nuneaton Reporter

DEVASTATED domino and darts team players could be hit for a double six if their beloved league - which has been running for more than half a century - is forced to fold.

For the past 54 years, the Bedworth Clubs League has given pub and club teams from across borough the chance to test their domino, darts and crib prowess.

But now just four teams have signed up for the new season.

Tom Walker, club secretary, say they are desperate for more teams to join or the league, which was formed in the 60s, could be forced off the oche.

“Over the past years, the club has changed, the number of teams have been going down. Over the last three years we ran it with just six teams,” he said.

“This coming season, we have had two teams drop out, now we are down to four and we can’t run it with four teams, we are in real danger of folding due to a lack of interest from clubs or pubs.”

The league meets on a Monday night and play darts, fives and threes and the odd game of crib.

Mr Walker says that the decline is down to a lack of interest in the traditional games,

“People are too busy playing computers, staring at a screen, they would rather have a computer in their hands than dominoes,” he said.

He said that the club has its AGM in a matter of weeks and they are appealing for clubs from across Nuneaton and Bedworth to enter some teams.

“The members we have left will not be happy if we have to fold,” he said.

“This league has been going for years and we need to stop its demise.”

Any pub or club who would like to enter a team or find out more information should call 024 76317 280.
