POLICE have launched a bid to shut a Coventry city centre nightclub after the grandson of Specials star Neville Staple was killed.

An interim injunction to close Club M, on Croft Road, will be sought by West Midlands Police at Coventry Magistrates’ Court today.

It is understood they wish to close the club for 28 days until a full hearing into the venue’s licence can take place.

A man, who had been stabbed in the stomach, was found in a life threatening condition on Hertford Place, around the back of nightclub Club M.

The victim, identified as 21-year-old Fidel Glasgow, the grandson of Coventry musician Neville Staple, died in hospital from his injuries.

Another man was found with multiple stab wounds nearby after the disorder which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A notice put up by West Midlands Police outside the premises alerted the public to its decision to apply for a closure order of 24 hours.

The order prohibited the club from opening on Saturday night.

The premises could now be closed for a further 28 days if a police application to have its license reviewed is granted.

According to the notices put up outside Club M on Hertford Place, the order was made by West Midlands Police inspector Mark Teago.

In the notice he states: “I am satisfied that there are reasonable grounds for believing that: (a) the use of the below premises has resulted or (if the notice is not issued) is likely soon to result, in nuisance to members of the public; or (b) there has been, or (if the notice is not issued) is likely soon to be, disorder near those premises associated with the use of those premises.”

The 24 hour closure prohibited the club from opening as usual on Saturday night.

A spokesperson for the force said: “On Saturday, September 1, police served an 24-hour closure notice on Club M, Coventry following the fatal stabbing of 21-year-old Fidel Glasgow.

“Police have applied for an expedited review under licensing legislation.

“An interim hearing is set to take place tomorrow (5 September) at Coventry Magistrates Court .”

A decision on whether to close the club for a further 28 days will be made at Coventry Magistrates’ Court.

During the hearing West Midlands Police will apply for the club’s licence to be revoked.

If their application is successful the club will be closed for a further 28 days.

A full review will then take place in order to establish whether the club should lose its licence or not.

At a full hearing the police will present evidence to support its application while the club will also be given the chance to present a case in its defence.
