Amazing work to support migrants

-

I HAVE been fortunate enough to be part of the Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre board for just over 12 months now.

The people that work here are amazing, they have helped welcome and meet the needs of refugees and migrants for many years.

They support integration into our city and continually help them rebuild their lives while encouraging them to contribute to the life of the city.

The UK does not do enough to support this area but I am optimistic following the PM’s visit to Nigeria last week. The UK government will unveil a series of measures to fight human trafficking and support victims of modern slavery in Nigeria, so that we can help to protect thousands of vulnerable people.

I am truly honoured to sit on the CRMC board and wish more people would support this great cause. It shouldn’t be up to centres like CRMC to support these people so I am pleased to see determined efforts from the government by driving the charge in tackling the root causes of dangerous migration, the benefits will be far reaching – preventing regional instability and helping us tackle modern slavery here in the UK.

There are many ways you can help support CRMC locally. If you want to get involved please check out www.covrefugee.org where you will find 15 ways you can help and support their services and clients. Councillor Tim Mayer (Con) Westwood ward
