Glad to hear service was held at Radford

-

IN reply to Vivien Phillips-Parham letter regarding The Radford Monument (Dec 1).

My letter seems to have ruffled a few feathers regarding this monument.

However I would like to say that I wrote my letter to the Telegraph in good faith before Remembrance Day, as I knew I would not be here this year. So it was good to see that there had been a service and that it had been well attended, and wreaths left, especially with it being centenary year.

Unfortunately this hasn’t always been the case as over the years I have purposely looked on Remembrance Day, or in that week, to pay my respects and see what wreaths might be there. Sadly none, apart from on one occasion, a little pile of pebbles was placed on the monument with a solitary poppy placed on top.

I had noticed the ground had been prepared on a number of occasions but it was always the absence of the wreaths that bugged me and also the way the soldiers’ names were never upgraded to make sense.

Even after the plaques were stolen and replaced, the names remain in the same unreadable manner. I guess those in authority want it to remain that way for the history books. But for me, I would have preferred to have seen the names reduced in size and put on one line, so that the soldiers could be truly honoured.

No offence meant. Just an honest opinion.

I have included two photographs; one showing the wreaths laid on Remembrance Day by church and guides, plus new inscriptions showing soldiers’ names, which was always one of my main issues. Josephine Oriel Vitols Keresley
