Hopes rise of £4m City summer boost

- By BRIAN DICK With Sky Blues

NEW Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers is reportedly lining up a summer £40m swoop for Bournemouth hotshot Callum Wilson – a move which would net the Sky Blues an estimated £4 MILLION to boost their spending power for next season.

Rodgers replaced Claude Puel as boss and the Foxes will be flexing their financial muscle in support of their high-profile new manager in a bid to repeat the glories of 2016’s shock Premier League-winning campaign.

The Sun has insiders reporting a move is being lined up, which would be bring a welcome boost to City’s coffers and end the speculation which has surrounded the striker’s future over the last two transfer windows.

Coventry City academy product Wilson was linked with Chelsea and West Ham in the January window.

That piqued City’s interest because they have a sell-on clause estimated to be ten per cent meaning any windfall would bring millions into the club.

In the end Chelsea went in a different direction in January and instead brought in AC Milan’s Gonzalo Higuain.

West Ham remain interested but so now are Leicester City, with The Sun claiming the England striker could be tempted by a move to the King Power Stadium who are certain to invest heavily.

Wilson has been sidelined in February since he underwent an operation on his knee and has not played since the 2-0 victory over West Ham.

He is nearing a return though and remains Bournemouth’s top scorer this season, with 12 goals in 25 appearances in all competitions.

The England international joined the Cherries in 2014 from Coventry after loan spells with Kettering Town and Tamworth.

Sky Blues reported around 850 tickets had been sold by Thursday lunchtime for tomorrow’s away trip to Accrington Stanley at the Wham Stadium.

The club’s allocation for the match is 2,045 and tickets are also available on the gate.

City have never beaten the reformed Stanley, having met them three times since they returned to the Football League in 2006.

Accrington won twice last season, when both clubs were going for promotion from League Two.

Indeed their 1-0 victory in the corresponding fixture last term was the first time the clubs had met in any way since Stanley started again 50 years earlier.

They backed that up with another win – 2-0 at the Ricoh last February, and a 1-1 draw at the same venue in November, meaning the Sky Blues have failed to score in two of the three games.

To be fair it’s worth pointing out that Coventry City did beat the old incarnation of Accrington Stanley on three straight occasions before the original club collapsed in 1966.

Coventry City will end 2018/19 on top of League One! Well, not quite in the way fans would like, but there is one department where the club is sitting on top of the tree this season – its programme.

The award has been bestowed on the Sky Blues’ Matchday magazine by Programme Monthly magazine.

A spokesman for the magazine opined: “An entertaining read, with plenty to keep the purchaser interested. A fine amount of articles on just about everything you could think of connected with the club. Brilliant!”

Content scored 9.5 out of 10, while there were top scores for history and value for money – giving Coventry City an overall score of 93.8%.

Mark Hornby, Head of Marketing and Communications at City, told the club’s website: “We were delighted to have been named Programme of the Year for League One and thank Programme Monthly for the honour.

“It is a great recognition of the hard work that many people put into making the programme a great one for supporters.

“Last year we were rated second best in League Two, so to go one better in League One is brilliant for us.”
