Plea to raise money for family made homeless in house collapse

- By MADELEINE CLARK News Reporter

A FAMILY from Rugby have been left with just the “clothes on their backs” after parts of their house collapsed.

The family were made homeless overnight after the extension on their end-of-terrace house in Claremont Road fell down, taking a whole side wall and parts of the roof with it as well as two of the children’s bedrooms, according to the fundraising post.

Rugby Borough Council has since offered the family, who were private tenants, temporary accommodation, which they have accepted.

But they are still without any possessions as they cannot return to the property.

Now a fundraising page has been set up in a bid to help them.

Set up by M Rodriguera, the post asking for donations revealed the children only had their “uniforms and school bags with them”.

It reads: “Thank God it happened when there is nobody in the house and they are all safe. Two of the kid’s bedrooms and the kitchen however are completely gone.

“For health and safety reasons, their house and what is left is inaccessible and will be for a while. They are in temporary accommodation at the moment and they are only able to save the clothes on their backs. The children only have their uniforms and school bags with them.

“Imagine their shock coming home from school seeing their house in ruins.”

At the time of writing, £530 had been donated. The page is trying to raise £3,000.

You can donate to the JustGiving page.

The post goes on to say that the family “are very active in the local parish, in the community and always ready to volunteer for local activities”.

It adds: “I always say that one of their greatest traits is to make everyone they come across feel that they are friends and family.

“I personally know them half of my life and consider them as my extended family. Knowing them, I am certain their faith in God will see them through this crisis in their lives.

“Let us rally support for them and their family at a time of their greatest need as they would have for many of us.”

Investigations are currently ongoing to work out how the end-of-terrace house collapsed. Checks are being made to see if the structure is safe and will not collapse further.

The road is currently closed to all traffic while investigators make sure the property is safe.

It is not known yet when the road will reopen.

A spokesman for Rugby Borough Council said: “Following the partial collapse of a property in Claremont Road, our Community Advice and Support Team has spoken to the tenants, who have accepted the council’s offer of accommodation.”

Emergency services called to the scene Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service and Warwickshire Police attended the incident, however nobody was injured.

A spokesman for Rugby Borough Council said an investigation has been launched.

They added: “Officers from Warwick Building Control arrived on site at a property in Claremont Road at around 7pm (Tuesday) after receiving a report a two-storey extension on a terraced property had collapsed.

“Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service, and Warwickshire Police attended the scene. The area was secured and a partial road closure put in place.”
