Have you got what it takes to be a crimefighter?

- By GRAHAM YOUNG & DANNY THOMPSON

THINK you have what it takes to stop bad guys and fight crime? Then West Midlands Police want to hear from you

The force need to recruit new members of staff who, amongst other things, will interview suspects and witnesses and the people of Coventry and welcome to apply.

Be it criminal damage, burglary, harassment, domestic abuse, assaults and safeguarding, no two days are the same as member of the police force.

There are roles currently within the Public Protection Unit (PPU), meaning successful candidates could be involved in cases such as incidents of child abuse and sexual assault, safeguarding and sexual offences as well as cases for the ForceCriminal Investigation Department (FCID).

If you’re interested but are concerned you don’t currently have any police experience, fear not - police experience is not required though ‘smart business attire’ is required.

Applicants should be prepared to work in any area of the force and be ‘able to think on your feet and be confident in making the right decisions.’

The job spec adds: “This role will provide a real insight into policing and the role of an investigator. You don’t have to be a police officer to investigate crime.

“We have investigators at all levels and we are developing a professional career pathway for non-police officer investigators.

“This is an excellent opportunity to start or continue your investigation career and make a real difference to communities across the West Midlands region.”

Applications are invited for 12-month, fixed term roles. The salary would be £32,435, including an additional weekend working allowance.

Police Staff Investigating Officers have powers allowing them to seize evidence, interview suspects, make arrests under certain proscribed circumstances and other powers in respect of detained persons.

Police Staff Investigators do not have these powers.

But they are able to carry out a range of different investigation activities.

Full training will be given but any prior investigation skills would be an advantage. You need to be flexible, organised, self-motivated and most of all approachable.

You will be required to offer support to victims of crime and be prepared to handle and diffuse situations of conflict.

You will need good IT skills, be able to work on your own and also as part of a team. You should be prepared to travel to various locations across the West Midlands.

Although you do not need to be qualified in investigations, successful applicants will be required to undergo investigative training.

Roles could be based in Birmingham, Coventry and the Black Country. You should have a full driving licence. Because funding has only been agreed for 12 months, there is no guarantee of a permanent job.
