PLANS for Kenilworth’s new secondary school have been approved sparking a large transformation in the Warwickshire town.

The new school falls alongside plans to build almost 2,000 new homes and is needed to accommodate the increased number of students.

Once the new build is finished, the school will have a capacity of up to 2,200 pupils - 400 more than its current numbers.

The secondary school and the sixth form will be located on the same site once the build is complete.

Located on Glasshouse Lane, it will stand where the annual horse fair is held.

Kenilworth School head Hayden Abbott, said: “This is absolutely terrific news and a pivotal point in the development of our new school. We are looking forward immensely to the next stage of this exciting journey.

“We would of course like to thank all those who were so vocal and enthusiastic in their support of this visionary project.”

Around 2,000 new homes will be built in Kenilworth, some of which will be affordable social housing.

Approximately 1,400 of these will be on the east side of the town, possibly located where the secondary school currently stands. More than 600 of these are going to be built just off the A46.

The additional homes, approximately 570 of them, will be located throughout Kenilworth.

The planning documents state: “As various permissions are already in place for these sites, the demand for the new school facility is considerable.”

The new school buildThere will be improved teaching, learning and sports facilities.

The car park will have a total of 194 spaces, with 11 disabled bays and 11 Electrical Vehicle charging points.

Glasshouse Lane will have two toucan crossings built and the footpaths and cycleway along the frontage will be extended.
