Brexit has led to much needed examination

THOUGH many commentators have described the Brexit debate as a crisis, Brexit has led to a much needed examining of public institutions.

The true purpose of the media, the Judiciary and Academia are now being questioned. This has to be good.

Similarly, individuals have had to ask themselves what are their own true values?

Personally, I have found myself drawn to the traditional working class values promoted by supporters of Labour Leave.

Sadly, the Labour Party has rejected these social values and it has become a Remain party dominated by a metropolitan elite.

Worse, Labour has become a party of intolerance. The awful truth is that the Labour party has lost its basic integrity.

Labour’s recent desperate attempt to lower the voting age to 16 and enfranchise EU citizens was an attempt at voting gerrymandering of the worst order. This action alone shows the depth the Labour Party has plumbed to.

It is a tragedy for the Labour party and it is a tragedy for the wider Labour movement.

I feel sorry for the many decent, working class Labour voters who have been betrayed by their party. Martin Judge

Speaker who has many qualities

I WAS pleased that Lindsay Hoyle was elected as Speaker. I think he will have many of Bercow’s qualities without his faults . Unlike Bercow, he won’t feel the need to be the centre of attention all the time.

It says something about social mobility that all nine candidates for Speaker went to public or private schools. None had a state secondary school education.

Paul Graham, Nuneaton.
