Confident Cov eye an upset at leaders Falcons

- By NIALL JACKSON

CovEntrY head coach nick Walshe has said his side are in confident mood as they take on table-topping newcastle Falcons on Sunday.

Walshe says the emphasis is on trying take the promotion favourites all the way in their own back yard.

He said: “We know newcastle are a quality side, and for everyone they’re the team to beat. they’re the favourites to go up after all.

“We’re looking at ourselves. We go up there with confidence and if we perform well, we know that we can push newcastle all the way.

“If we get our game plan and execution right, we can be very competitive against them this weekend.”

the Blue and Whites overcame a well-drilled Doncaster Knights side 18-6 last weekend but Walshe knows a step up in terms of performance will be needed against the unbeaten Falcons.

“You can’t go into any game focusing too much on the opposition,” he said. “We’ve got to look at what we can achieve. that is defending newcastle, attacking newcastle and getting our set-piece right as that is a key area.

“We just know this week, with no disrespect intended to Doncaster, that it will be a step up from that game. We’re away from home and it is a very tough place to go. I’ve played there before, and it is a great place to play a game of rugby.

“We’re focusing on ourselves to try to go and get a result.”

Going to one of the most intimidating grounds in Kingston Park this Sunday could be one of the most difficult challenges in the second tier of English rugby.

Walshe however, feels the lack of experience amongst the squad in terms of playing at the venue, could in fact put them in a better position.

He said: “Sometimes if you haven’t been to a place it can be better as you don’t know it. It is a great ground to play at and newcastle are a fantastic club.

“If we get our game right, we can be really competitive. You want to be going to places like Kingston Park and putting on a good show.

“Let’s see how far we have come. reality could bite us, but on the other hand we could come out thinking we’re exactly where we want and need to be”.
