HAVE YOU STILL GOT UNBANKED CHEQUES FROM LAST CHRISTMAS?

THE humble cheque may not be as popular as it once was, but one in five people (18%) expect to receive one for Christmas, with younger adults particularly likely to receive them, according to a survey by HSBC.

More than a quarter (26%) of 18-24-year-olds are expecting to receive a cheque for Christmas, but, one in five

(19%) admit to not paying cheques into their account, HSBC said, and 38% of 18-24-year-olds believe they have a cheque they’ve yet to pay in.

HSBC found that only half (51%) of recipients would deposit all cheques they receive, regardless of value, while one in 10 of the more than 2,000 people surveyed said they wouldn’t bother if it was less than £5 in value.

However, cheque imaging technology means depositing a cheque may be less of a hassle in some cases. HSBC has a cheque depositing service through its app, meaning the process can take just minutes.

Other banks have also been using imaging technology to make cheque use more convenient.

UNIVERSITY GRADUATES MAY BE MORE LIKELY TO FALL FOR PENSION SCAMS

PEOPLE educated to degree level could be more at risk of falling for a pension scam than those who have not been to university, research from regulators has found.

Those with a university degree are more likely to accept a “free pension review” from a company they have not dealt with before – and also more likely to take up the offer of early access to their pension pot than those without a degree. Both are common scam tactics, according to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Pensions Regulator (TPR), which published the research.
