THOUSANDS RAISED AFTER CATHEDRAL RAID APPEAL

- > MATT LLOYD

OVER £2,000 has been raised following the launch of a fundraising appeal to replace Coventry Cathedral’s iconic glass angels.

Thieves smashed their way into the cathedral on January 24 destroying one of the angels featured in John Hutton’s iconic West Screen.

It is believed they stole collection money although it is not known how much.

Following the raid cathedral staff said they had been overwhelmed with messages of support and many asked how they could donate towards the costs of repairs.

Now a page has been set up to allow for donations in a bit to either repair or replace the masterpiece left in tatters by the thieves.

Posted on the Coventry Cathedral website, the appeal has so far raised £2,295.50 out of a £20,000 target.

Cathedral staff revealed they are consulting with international experts to determine whether the angel can be saved, or will need to be replaced.

The appeal says: “One of Coventry Cathedral’s beautiful and iconic angels was smashed by thieves in the early hours of Friday 24th January 2020.

“The Angel is badly damaged and we are working with international modern glass experts to establish whether it can be repaired or whether we will need to replace it.

“We are hugely grateful to the many people who have said they would like to contribute to the cost of this work, which we expect to be at least £20,000.”

Following the raid, Dean John said: “It’s only a building - but buildings matter. And this is an irreplaceable piece of art that has served to inspire millions of visitors, which is now lost - or at least irrevocably damaged - for ever.

“That’s our history: we have experienced loss before, but it doesn’t make it any less heartbreaking. We search our own hearts today for the grace to follow Provost Howard’s example of praying ‘Father Forgive’ and to reach out in compassion and forgiveness to those responsible.”

The West Screen at Coventry Cathedral is a vast wall of glass featuring 66 figures.

It took a decade to create and features the likeness of biblical figures such as Abraham, Moses, David, Elijah, Isiah, St Michael, The Virgin Mary and John the Baptist and a host of saints.

Around those figures are angels, some flying. It was one of the angels that was smashed in the raid.
