Mass brawl at junior boxing event

A MASS brawl broke out at a sporting venue in Ryton-on-Dunsmore on February 15, leaving several people in hospital.

Warwickshi­re Police were called to the Sports Connexion Arena on Leamington Road at around 3.20pm to reports that a number of people were fighting.

The England Boxing National Youth Championsh­ips was taking place at the venue but following the incident a decision was taken to cancel yesterday’s boxing.

The championsh­ip was scheduled to take place over three days, February 14, 15 and 16, and sees some of the country’s best youth boxers compete for national title belts.

Four people were taken to hospital with injuries. These are not thought to be lifethreat­ening or lifechangi­ng.

So far, no arrests have been made.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have informatio­n to come forward.

Following the incident, Superinten­dent Pete Hill from Warwickshi­re Police said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for members of the public who were at the arena at Sports Connexion this afternoon and witnessed this largescale violent disorder.

“We will not tolerate incidents of this nature and are working hard to establish the circumstan­ces surroundin­g this incident.

“The public can expect to see a heightened police presence in and around the area while officers continue to conduct their enquiries.

“I would urge anyone who may have witnessed this incident, hasvideo footage of the incident or has informatio­n that could help with our investigat­ion to please get in touch.

“Following consultati­on with the police, the owner of Sports Connexion has agreed that tomorrow’s [February 16] boxing event will not be going ahead.”
