Travel expert NIGEL THOMPSON answers your queries...

CAN I GO ANYWHERE OVERSEAS AT THE MOMENT?

THE Foreign Office says only travel abroad if essential until at least April 15. A holiday will not be considered essential.

I HAD A HOLIDAY BOOKED FOR TRAVEL BEFORE APRIL 15

YOUR provider may offer a Refund Credit Note to book a later break.

SHOULD I GET TRAVEL INSURANCE?

NEVER travel abroad without a suitable policy.

I’VE A HOLIDAY BOOKED AFTER APRIL 15

IF THE Foreign Office advises against your destination, your firm will contact you to discuss options. There is no obligation to give a refund.

I’M PAYING IN INSTALMENTS FOR A TRIP AFTER APRIL 15

PROBABLY best to carry on paying or you lose what you’ve already paid.

MY HOLIDAY IS AFTER APRIL 15 BUT I HAVE A PRE-EXISTING CONDITION AND DON’T WANT TO GO

IF the Foreign Office has no advice in place, there is no obligation to give a refund. But if your doctor advises in writing not to travel, check insurance about a claim.

WHAT IF MY PROVIDER GOES BUST?

CONSIDER buying a package holiday with UK Civil Aviation Authority ATOL (Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing) protection. If arranging your own travel, it’s wise to pay on a credit card so you are covered for up to £30,000 by the Consumer Credit Act.

I HAVE SUMMER FLIGHTS BOOKED

CANCELLING incurs a fee but you may be able to amend the date of travel for free with a flexible ticket. If you keep the booking, you should be able to get your money back if your flight is axed.

I HAVE A HOTEL OR VILLA BOOKED

COST of cancelling depends on the terms of the booking. If the hotel or villa is shut by government advice in that country, you should get your cash.

WHAT ABOUT STAYCATIONS?

HOTELS and holiday parks are shut. If it’s a package, talk to your provider. If a direct booking, check the small print.
