We must learn from this awful coronavirus
THE coronavirus pandemic should not come as any big surprise, something like this was bound to happen at some point.
We were fortunate that the SARS and MERS virus did not become global but the warnings were not heeded.
Instead we were more concerned about greedily attracting tourists from countries that still operate disgusting live animal food markets. It’s from one of these markets we are told that the virus started.
When we have defeated the virus I would suggest banning all flights to and from any country that still tolerate live animal food markets. It only takes one infected person travelling from one international airport to another to potentially infect most of the world.
In future it would be a good idea for people to stay closer to home for their holidays. It would not only prevent people from picking up viruses but also cut down on air pollution as there would be fewer flights. How ironic that as a nation of travellers we have ended up stuck inside our homes.
One thing is for sure and that is the UK cannot afford for something like this to happen again anytime soon. The cost in lives lost and the financial implications will take many years to recover from, if we ever do. R Goodfellow,

So many people deserve our respect
IT was right that so many people went out to applaud the devoted NHS staff. Their work is crucial. We should remember others without whom our society would also be deeply affected. They include the emergency services, refuse collectors and those dealing with buses, trains, water, drainage, electricity and gas supplies, postal deliveries and more.
