City facing yet another EFL delay
THE EFL have told Coventry City that they will be made to wait just that little bit longer to learn the fate of their Championship promotion hopes.
EFL boss Rick Parry (pictured below) and his board met yesterday afternoon to discuss a host of alternative proposals, submitted by City’s rivals, outlining how they believe the season should be completed – if play cannot continue.
Parry, who has been open to alternative suggestions from the get-go, outlined his own plan a fortnight ago that promised to honour promotion and relegation as well a fourteam play-off to promote a third club to the Championship.
It was then planned that on Monday all 71 EFL clubs will vote as to whether they approve or disapprove that plan with a 51 per cent majority, and 13 clubs from the Championship, required to agree to sway the vote.
But now the EFL have re-plotted their course and have blown that vote wide open.
Now, the Sky Blues must wait until Tuesday when clubs will discuss how the campaign will be finished and there will now be more than just Parry’s proposal on the table.
This move will undoubtedly see City’s wait for promotion be extended as rivals Sunderland and Peterborough United join a cast of League One clubs rallying to see games resume as soon as possible.
The EFL statement read: “The EFL board met today and considered a number of proposals submitted by EFL clubs in respect of proposed amendments to EFL regulations in order to determine what will happen in the event the 2019/20 season is curtailed in any EFL division.
“This now brings an end to a comprehensive consultation phase and clubs have today received formal notice of the meeting which will now take place on Tuesday 9 June 2020.
“At that meeting clubs will consider a number of different proposals from both clubs and the board of the EFL.”
