Life’s a beach in man’s back garden

- By JOSH LAYTON News Reporter

A RESOURCEFUL staycationer has brought the Med to his back garden by building a mini-beach resort complete with a jacuzzi and swimming pool.

Guy Young, 34, spent a year-anda-half constructing the party zone at his home in Nuneaton.

Looking more like a terrace at a club in Ibiza rather than anything out of a Warwickshire property manual, the crowning glory is the leisure pool with underwater chillout seats which the DIY rookie dug out by hand before adding a mosaic made out of 38,000 tiles.

The optician’s semi-detached, two-bed home also has a hot tub under a wooden gazebo, seating and decking that leads around the different areas. A cocktail bar and barbecue make the ideal spot to kick back in the sunshine.

Guy said: “We were thinking of ways to make use of the space and it just snowballed from there. I’ve always enjoyed the Mediterranean style from holidays and it was about trying to recreate that as much as possible.

“I’ve never done any woodwork or brickwork before, I’m a complete novice in every sense of the word. So I relied heavily on Youtube tutorials and many a time I was staying up quite late watching videos of people making pools by hand and I thought, ‘if they can do it I can do it.’”

Guy finished the party zone around four weeks ago after spending £9,500 and carrying out 18 months of work aided by friends Luke Ridgeway and Ian Murphy. But the project has kept on growing, with Guy adding a 12ft sandpit forming a beach-like area by the pool.

He said: “My friends helped me out so I promised them they could cannonball in as soon as it was finished and that was the Christening of it. Since then it’s timed well with the lockdown starting to lift because people haven’t been on holiday, they haven’t been able to get together or have a place they can enjoy themselves at. It’s been a venue friends who haven’t seen each other can meet.

“The fact they can go in the pool and the jacuzzi and it feels like being on holiday is just the cherry on the cake really.”
