A MOTORCYCLIST died after an early morning smash in Coundon yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the junction of Coundon Road and Barker’s Butts Lane at around 6.30am.

It is understood that the 23-year-old man was riding with a woman pillion passenger.

Despite the best efforts of medical staff, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman on the back of the bike sustained serious injuries and is currently in a critical condition in hospital.

Roads were cordoned off in the area as a forensic examination of the scene continued.

Det Sgt Alan Hands from the Serious Collision Unit, said: “A young man has lost his life and a woman is critically injured in hospital and our thoughts are with their families.

“Our investigations are at a very early stage but we do not believe any other vehicle was involved.

“We are working to establish exactly what happened here and we would urge any witnesses we have not already spoken to come forward and for anyone with any dashcam footage from the area to get in touch with us.

A spokeswoman for West midlands Ambulance Service said: “When crews arrived, they found a man, who was the motorcyclist, in a critical condition with bystander CPR already in progress.

“Staff continued in administering basic life support on scene, but sadly, despite the best efforts nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”
