Black lives in the spotlight

-

INSPIRED by the Black Lives Matter movement, this series of short films is set to illustrate the importance of black perspectives.

A stellar cast, including Nicholas Pinnock, Yasmin Monet Prince, Joe Cole, Amanda Abbington and Paapa Essiedu have filmed these 15-minute dramas over lockdown.

ITV drama boss Polly Hill says: “The scripts are unique, fresh and engaging, about real people in completely real situations, confronting and exploring racism and prejudice. I hope in some small way each of these films will bring about change.”

Tonight’s first instalment, starring Pinnock and Monet Prince in the lead roles, explores the relationship a black father and daughter have with each other.

When Oliver catches his teenage daughter, Justina, sneaking out, the usual scenes of antagonism between parent and child follow.

However, it soon transpires that Justina is heading out to a Black Lives Matter march – but each has a different view on what it means to fight for social justice and Oliver fears for his daughter’s safety.

Tomorrow’s episode tells the story of a former couple who bump into each other a few years later at a mate’s party.

Wednesday’s episode focuses upon the lives of young professional couple Kay and Michael, and the aftermath of them being stopped by the police while out on a date.

And finally, Thursday’s episode centres around an uncomfortable conversation between a white woman and her mixed race daughter, who has recently had a baby with a black man.

Thought-provoking and important dramas, these will spark debate.
