Cases of Covid-19 appear to be falling in Coventry & Warks

- By CLAIRE MILLER

COVENTRY and Warwickshire appears to be seeing falling numbers of Covid19 deaths and cases, according to the most recent government figures.

In the week ending August 7, one person died a Covid-19-related death in Coventry, the same as the week before, according to figures released on August 18 by the Office for National Statistics.

In Warwickshire, there were no deaths in the most recent week, down from three a week before.

The figures are based on the number of deaths registered up to August 15, where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate.

Overall, there have been 287 deaths across Coventry involving Covid-19 between the start of the outbreak and August 7.

Of those deaths, most (184) took place in hospital, with 78 in care homes.

There were also 16 deaths recorded at home, seven in hospices, and two elsewhere.

There have been 595 Covid-19-related deaths in Warwickshire up to August 7.

Of these, 355 were in hospital, 211 were in care homes, 18 were recorded at home, nine in hospices, and two in other communal establishments.

Other communal establishments include prisons, halls of residence, hotels, and sheltered accommodation while elsewhere covers deaths outside and people declared dead on arrival at hospital..

Figures from Public Health England (PHE) suggest around 54 people tested positive for Covid-19 in Coventry in the week ending August 9.

The figures are calculated from infection rates in the local area based on Pillar 1 (hospital and care settings and Pillar 2 (drive-through test centres and swabs sent by post) testing.

The 54 positive tests in the week ending August 9 compares to 55 the week before and 38 in the week before that.

The infection rate per 100,000 people was 14.5 in Coventry in the week ending August 9, 14.7 the week before, and 10.4 the week before that.

Over the past three weeks, the infection rate was recorded as 5.4 per 100,000 in Warwickshire in the most recent week, 7.7 the week ending August 2, and 5.4 the week before that.

Government figures also give a more detailed picture of what is happening with Covid-19 cases and deaths in care homes.

Separate figures from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), show no deaths involving coronavirus in care homes in Coventry or Warwickshire in the week ending August 14.

Notifications about deaths in care homes are typically provided to the CQC within two to three days of death and are included based on the statement from the care home provider, so the person who died may not have had a medical diagnosis or a test result and Covid-19 may not have been mentioned on the death certificate.

The figures show a total of 87 Covid19 related deaths were notified to the CQC by care homes in Coventry and 177 in Warwickshire between April 10 and August 14.
