MAJOR £82m work to change the face of Coventry Railway Station continues to take shape - as the building turns red.

Red cladding now envelopes much of the transport hub as works to the station and the area around it continue.

A huge new metal ‘Coventry Station’ sign has also appeared at the building.

And now a giant crane has arrived at the site.

Currently a new boulevard section is under construction creating a pedestrian and cycle route between the station and the city centre. The aim is to have that completed ahead of the start of UK City of Culture.

City regeneration chief Cllr Jim O’boyle visited the site on Friday tweeting: “Had a look at the new railway station today with its beautiful red cladding and fantastic Coventry sign. A real statement of a confident Coventry.”

The Coventry Station Masterplan project is being funded by £39.4 million from the West Midlands Combined Authority Devolution Deal and £27.5 million from the Government’s Local Growth Fund through the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) as well as funds from Coventry City Council.

Coventry City Council is working in partnership with Network Rail, Avanti West Coast and other rail operators, Transport for West Midlands, Friargate JV Project Ltd and other stakeholders on the scheme.

The huge £82m project also includes installing a new footbridge over platforms one, two and three and four to provide more capacity for increasing passengers which will be connected to a second station building which will contain new retail units and passengers’ facilities that can be accessed from Station Square and Warwick Road.

A new 633 space multi-storey carpark sits on top of the new station building.
