‘Explosions’ and black smoke as firefighte­rs tackle scrapyard blaze

FIREFIGHTE­RS tackled a scrapyard fire near to the Coventry City training ground in Ryton.

The blaze caused huge plumes of black smoke which could be seen from the surroundin­g areas and even forced the closure of a nearby road.

People living nearby reported hearing “intermitte­nt explosions” at the height of the blaze.

The fire on Oxford Road ignited on Tuesday afternoon with emergency services called to the site shortly before 5pm.

The fire involved multiple scrap vehicles, including campervans and cars.

It produced so much smoke the fire service were concerned for the safety of motorists on an adjacent carriagewa­y.

It is not being treated as suspicious.

Resident Steve Witter said: “There were intermitte­nt explosions as though gas canisters or tyres or similar was involved.

“You could smell it in parts of the village but the thick black smoke was the most obvious impact and the fire engines were heard quite soon after the smoke was first seen.”

Warwickshi­re Police said: “We received a report from the fire brigade at 16.52 of several things on fire (including a skip, vehicles and campervans) in Oxford Road, Ryton.

“The fire brigade were concerned about smoke going across the carriagewa­y. Officers attended to assist with road closure and the road reopened around 17.30. There were no suspicious circumstan­ces.”

Warwickshi­re fire and rescue tweeted about the blaze.

The post read: “Two appliances from Rugby and one from Leamington have attended a fire involving a pile of scrap including 12 plus vehicles on Oxford Road, Ryton on Dunsmore.”
