AN unauthorised Traveller encampment on Hearsall Common has been served notice to quit.

It is not known when the Travellers arrived on the site but local people reported seeing the encampment on the evening of Sunday May 8.

The encampment was set up on part of Hearsall Common along two stretches of Tile Hill Lane where it meets with the junction of Broad Lane.

A spokesman for Coventry City Council said on Monday that notice had been served on the encampment on Hearsall Common and that if they did not leave the case would be presented to Coventry Magistrates’ Court.

The city council spokesman said: “Notice has been served on the Hearsall Common unauthorised encampment requiring them to leave. If they do not leave the site we will present the case at the magistrates’ court as soon as possible.”

Hearsall Common was targeted by travellers less than a year ago with an unauthorised encampment remaining there for almost two weeks.

Travellers arrived on council-owned land at Hearsall Common on June 9 last year and were still reported by residents to be on the site on Tuesday June 22. Coventry City Council said a court order was obtained to remove the group and they then left.

Elsewhere in Coventry anger is growing after more Travellers reportedly arrived at a usually busy park in Longford.

It is understood they first began turning up on the grassland on the morning of Saturday April 30.

Rubbish bags filled with waste have lined the streets outside Peggy’s Park and are said to be ‘gathering’ as the days roll by.

One local resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “More Travellers have turned up over the weekend, and parked up right outside of people’s back gates. Dog walkers and people trying to enjoy the area are being harassed by dogs which are running around off leads and constantly barking all day.”

On Monday a spokesman for Coventry City Council said the authority had successfully obtained a court order which would allow them to evict the group of Travellers on Peggy’s Park.

The spokesman said: “The council’s legal team attended court this morning (May 9) and were successful in obtaining the court order allowing us to proceed with the eviction of the encampment from Peggy’s Park.”
