A LARGE traveller camp has moved onto a recreation ground in Rugby sparking anger among residents of the town.

Around 20 caravans were said to have pitched up at Avon Mill recreation ground in Newbold Road on May 9.

Rugby Borough Council said it had been made aware of the camp and that it would serve a legal order to remove the travellers if they did not move of their own volition.

“We are aware of an encampment near the Avon Mill,” a spokesman said. “This camp is not authorised. We have carried out welfare checks and are serving legal notes and if the residents remain on site we will be applying for an order.”

Hundreds of people commented about the camp in various conversations on the Spotted: Rugby Town Facebook group. Many alluded to previous occasions when travellers were at that site and others in the town.

Nick Seymour said: “Last time they were there they ripped the grass up driving around.”

Claire Prestige added: “I picked up broken glass and other rubbish they left last time so the field was safe.”

Sarah L Braithwaite said: “If they respect the area and tidy up after themselves then I don’t mind. The last time there were caravans on there they left a right mess!”

Chantelle Gordon said: “Yes, sometimes they do leave a mess, but so do people who fly tip rubbish or go to festivals but nothing gets said about that does it.”

Shannon Rollins said: “You people are more obsessed with travellers than your own lives. Honestly there are many more issues that need to be dealt with other than a few people just living in a caravan not bothering anyone.”

Abbie Smith was in agreement, saying: “Like honestly, if they aren’t doing anything that is disruptive what does it matter.”
