Shippers is ‘a great fit for Shrews’

-

SHREWSBURY Town boss Steve Cotterill has revealed the extent of his homework into Jordan Shipley before deciding to sign him from Coventry City.

The Shrews’ manager has handed the popular 24-year-old Sky Blues player a three year contract at Montgomery Waters Meadow and he will officially join the squad on June 10 after signing for the League One club for an undisclosed fee.

Shipley is Town’s first signing of the close season, with Cotterill saying: “I’m really pleased to have got Jordan in so early on. He’s a good player and it’s a great time to sign him. He scores

goals and he’s a good young man with a nice family so I think he’ll fit in well.”

City manager Mark Robins revealed after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Stoke – when he handed the midfielder one last appearance for his boyhood club and an opportunity to say goodbye to the fans – that the club had accepted a bid for his services.

Coventry triggered a clause in his contract to extend his deal for another 12 months to ensure they got a fee for a player the club have invested in from the age of seven.

And Cotterill revealed that he has held a number of meetings with the player in recent weeks, telling the club’s website: “I’ve done my homework and I’ve had meetings with him so I do know him well [as a person].

“With all the data and clips that are flying around you know what you’re getting with a footballer but you don’t know the person until you meet them face-to-face, but after meeting him I think he’s the right type of person we want in the squad. To sign a player at 24-years-old for a fee puts some good value back into the squad and the move is also good business for the club as well.

“[He’ll bring] athleticism, a great left foot, and goals [to the squad].”
