Doyle joins new Forest Green set-up

-

FORMER Coventry City skipper Michael Doyle is back in League One after joining newly-appointed Ian Burchnall at Forest Green Rovers.

The 40-year-old Sky Blues legend has switched from Notts County to continue to be assistant to head coach Burchnall who was yesterday unveiled as successor to Rob Edwards, who led the Gloucestershire club to promotion and the League Two title before being appointed Watford manager earlier this month.

The 39-year-old Burchnall confirmed that Doyle will be joining him in switching from Meadow Lane.

Burchnall had been at Notts County since March 2021 and led the team to fifth in the National League this year. Doyle signed for the Magpies on a free transfer in January 2019, initially as a player before taking on a player/ coach role before hanging up his boots at the end of last season after making 91 appearances for the club.

This season was the second successive time the managerial partnership had taken Notts County to the National League play-offs, although they were defeated by Torquay United in the semifinals last year and by Grimsby Town at the same stage this season.

“I’m really delighted to sign at FGR and be part of what is an exciting chapter in the club’s history,” Burchnall said.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to come and lead the club and the challenge of football in League One was just too good to turn down, especially at a progressive and forward-thinking club.”

League Two side Barrow have appointed Pete Wild as their new manager on a threeyear deal following his departure from FC Halifax Town.

The former Oldham boss, 38, departed The Shay on Thursday after Halifax were beaten by Chesterfield in the National League play-offs.
