Biyi earns an England call after sterling work in front row at Wasps
WASPS prop Biyi Alo has been named in a 35-player England squad.
The tighthead has featured in his club’s last 16 Gallagher Premiership and European games and will participate in a three-day training camp in Teddington that starts today.
Also getting a first senior call-up is Charlie Atkinson, who has featured in shadow squads before and excelled against Leicester Tigers in Saturday’s defeat at Mattioli Woods Welford Road.
There’s recalls for Dan Robson and Paolo Odogwu while Jack Willis and Alfie Barbeary remain in the squad that does not feature players who featured in this weekend’s Gallagher Premiership semi-finals.
Wasps captain Joe Launchbury, who withdrew from the last minicamp due to injury, is not in the latest squad.
Jonny May returns to the squad after recovering from a knee injury. While Freddie Clarke, Sam Jeffries and Patrick Schickerling all get their first senior call-ups.
Luke Cowan-dickie (knee injury) and Anthony Watson (calf issue) will also be in camp undertaking rehab work.
Elsewhere, analyst Joe Lewis has rejoined the England set-up after a year working with Scarlets. Lewis will take on a new role of training coordinator and will lead analysis work on special projects.
Jones said: “With a number of players unavailable because of the Premiership semi-finals, we’ve got the opportunity to call up some new players. It’s a great opportunity to learn about them and see what potential they have to play a part in the Australia tour.
“We look forward to continuing the good work from our last camp in developing this team on and off the pitch.”
May made his comeback for Gloucester on Saturday, featuring as a second-half substitute after five months out recovering from a knee injury.
Nowell, who broke his arm during England’s Guinness Six Nations defeat against France in March, also returned for Exeter during the final round of regular season Premiership action.
Elsewhere, exciting London Irish back Henry Arundell earns another chance to impress as Jones runs the rule over players ahead of the trip Down Under.
Jones, though, has already lost Sale centre Manu Tuilagi (knee) and Exeter back-row forward Sam Simmonds (hip) from his tour plans.
After facing Australia in Perth, England then head to Brisbane for the second Test before rounding off the tour in Sydney on July 16.
