Motherland and Line of Duty star Anna Maxwell Martin (right, as a child) is in full-on mum duty as the cameras catch up with her for this episode. She says: “Like lots of people, I spend my life running around picking up children, dropping off children, cooking, chopping.”

The 45-year-old is keen to know how far back the parenting patterns run.

Travelling to the small town in Northern Ireland where her late father Ivan grew up, her understanding of her grandparents, who suffered a heart-breaking family tragedy, is turned on its head.

On her mother’s side, Anna starts with her twinkly-eyed grandfather Maxwell, whose name she added to her own to create her stage name.
