Sky Blues in good health for fitness camp

DABO, SHEAF & ECCLES GETTING OVER INJURIES

- By ANDY TURNER

MARK Robins is hopeful he’ll have an injury-free Coventry City squad by the time they set off for their annual pre-season training camp in Spain.

The Sky Blues ended last season with three players receiving treatment.

Wing-back Fankaty Dabo sat out the last four matches after pulling up with a hamstring strain against Birmingham City, while midfielder Ben Sheaf suffered ruptured ankle ligaments against West Bromwich Albion, and missed the final two games of the campaign.

Midfielder turned wing-back Josh Eccles, meanwhile, suffered last-day agony when he was carried off at the Bet365 Stadium with a hamstring tear in a game in which Matty Godden made a tentative return from a calf strain that had kept him sidelined for most of April.

Providing an update on those injuries as the Sky Blues prepare to head to Spain in the week of July 4, Robins told the Coventry Telegraph: “Ben looks like he is recovering nicely and joined in this week, and Josh Eccles will be available for when we go on tour. The recovery has been good so hopefully we can keep that going.”

As for fans’ favourite Dabo, who had a bit of a stop-start campaign last term due to various knocks and niggles, Robins revealed that the club’s fitness and medical staff are working hard with the player to prevent further issues in the season ahead.

“Fanky was fit before we left for the summer break really but we just couldn’t use him,” he said.

“There was no point because we thought we may as well get him to a stage where he can come straight back in, and he looks fit and strong, and we will keep doing some work with him to make sure he’s as robust as he can be for a really demanding season.”

Godden, meanwhile, who was limited to 25 games last season for various reasons, not least suffering the bad fortune of going down with appendicitis and having to have surgery, returned for pre-season training yesterday when Robins described him as “fit as a fiddle.”

Julien Dacosta reported back this week with a slight hamstring strain which has forced him to sit out the first few days.
