CROWN FOOLS
HARRY AND MEGHAN SEEM ONLY TOO HAPPY TO TAKE NETFLIX CASH, REGARDLESS OF HOW THE STREAMING GIANT PORTRAYS THE ROYAL FAMILY IN ITS HIT DRAMA SERIES
ALTHOUGH undeniably an extraordinary show with an outstanding cast and unparalleled production, a few series of The Crown was enough for me.
While a must-watch for millions, I found it all a little too clichéd. That does not mean to say, however, that I have not seen how the show has continued to court controversy as it exploits the royal family’s life and loves, tragedies and traumas for profit.
Only this week, the US makers Netflix sparked further backlash as it emerged the new series plans to recreate Princess Diana’s final tragic moments in Paris.
It comes as the show faces increasing anger over its plot lines, with claims of insensitivity so soon after the Queen’s death.
Bosses are also under fire over soon-to-be-aired scenes suggesting Prince Philip had an affair with a female friend.
Yet despite the portrayal of his own family, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle seem happy to support the makers by taking their millions for their own Netflix programme.
This week it was reported their controversial documentary has been delayed after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were said to have wanted to make edits following the Queen’s death.
“They’re rattled at
Netflix, and they blinked first and decided to postpone the documentary,” a source is said to have told US website Deadline.
The docuseries did not have an official release date initially.
Still, multiple sources said it was to drop before Christmas – weeks after the premiere of the fifth season of The Crown.
Over the weekend, it was also claimed there were issues with the programme after producers allegedly had concerns with comments Harry and Meghan made, which appeared to contradict what he has written in his upcoming memoir.
Ever since inking their multi-million dollar deal, many people have been in disbelief over how the Queen’s grandson has taken money from Netflix, which has been exploitative of his family for years. Although in an interview with his pal James Corden last year, Harry said The Crown, doesn’t “pretend to be news” and is “fictional”.
But it seems such a move is in keeping with their playbook – using their royalty and connections to line their pockets so they can live the selfsufficient life they want.
As they continue to trade off their relationships with the royals, they appear content with their employers trashing – as they too have done – their relatives.
Harry has never made any secret of his contempt for people he feels tormented his mother to her death. How sorry, then, that he should suddenly find himself on the payroll of those turning her suffering and the rest of his family into entertainment.
Their deal leaves you wondering how The Crown will tackle the story of the Duke and Duchess’s departure from the UK.
Even more so, who would play former actress Meghan? Hmmm...
