Display was ‘up there with very best’ for Robins

MARK Robins described Coventry City’s victory over QPR as being “up there with the best” in terms of performances he’s seen from his side since being back in the Championship.

Two goals from Viktor Gyokeres secured a brilliant 2-0 victory over Michael Beale’s side who went into the game in sixth place in the league. The Sky Blues’ win came as their seventh from their last nine in the division, and 10th clean sheet in 13, and lifted them up a place to 11th, just two points off the play-off places.

“Regardless of the result it was a very good performance going into the break after a really solid 11 or 12 games,” said the City manager.

“I think QPR are really good and their manager has been in the game a long, long time in terms of his coaching career and he has come in and had a flying start, really, so much so that he has attracted the attention of Premier League clubs. They have got some top players in the side and you know it’s going to be a tough game and that we had to be at our best. And we were at our best, there’s no doubt.”

He added: “That today was up there with the performances but you can also see that teams have played a lot of games. There’s a lot of that going on where their energy levels are just under and that was probably the case for both sides but I thought we had recovered really well.

“We are two games shy of most still and there was some brilliant play which culminated in two really good goals and it could have been more. The keeper has made a really good save from Vik’s header for a hat-trick and then we have broken away with Gus for one of their set plays and he picks the left-hand side rather than the right and it got blocked out and they made a counter attack. But for the most part we defended well. It was fairly even in terms of possession but we kept their chances down to a minimum.

“Ben made a brilliant save from a shot that was heading for the top corner from Rob Dickie and we ended up with another clean sheet, which is fantastic, and we’ll take those all day. And we scored two brilliant goals and some of the football was scintillating – it was up there with some of the best performances, that’s for sure.”
