River one of 111 on flood alert after day-long downpours

THE Environmen­t Agency has warned that the River Anker in Nuneaton is on flood alert following day-long downpours. It is one of 111 flood alerts issued in the UK after rain lashed the region in recent days.

Mancetter has been hard hit according to the government agency, which has warned motorists to beware. The alert issued last night reads: “River levels are forecast to rise at the Mancetter river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall.

“Consequent­ly, flooding of roads and farmland is possible overnight. Areas most at risk are low-lying land and roads adjacent to the River Anker between Nuneaton and Tamworth the River Sence between Temple Mill and Ratcliffe Culey.

“Further rainfall is forecast over the next 12 hours and we expect river levels to rise overnight. We are closely monitoring the situation and our incident response staff have cleared weed screens ahead of this forecasted rain.

Outlook for today to Saturday:

Further bands of rain crossing the region on Thursday and Saturday. These bringing milder conditions but offset by strong winds. A drier and cooler interlude on Friday.
