AN investigation is under way after fish were found dead in a stretch of the Coventry canal covered in a ‘strange blue tint.’

A passer-by was left stunned with what he saw when walking along the stretch of canal in Atherstone.

Resident Stuart Etheridge spoke about his strange find, which has been reported to the Environment Agency and Canal and River Trust.

“I was walking along the canal in Atherstone on Saturday morning, and when I got to the top lock pound, I noticed a lot of gulls in the area and the canal had a strange blue tint to it,” he explained.

“I then saw there were fish floating on the water, which must have attracted the gulls. There were some youngsters playing by the canal and they were trying to scoop one of the dead fish out of the water.

“It was so sad to see all the fish dead and floating on the surface.

Some of them were pretty large, so had probably lived a great life until now.

“I reported the incident to The Environment Agency and the Canal and River Trust, who responded this morning, Monday, to say they were investigating the incident. I also put a message out on Facebook and people said the blue colour seemed to start in the Mancetter area. I spoke to an angler today who identified the dead fish as roach, bream and perch.”

Following the incident, the Canals and River Trust has confirmed it is looking into the incident.

“We are aware of the discolouration of the canal at Atherstone, and we are working with the Environment Agency to work out what the blue tinge is and where it has come from,” a spokesman said.

“Sadly, we have had reports of fish dying and we are closely monitoring the oxygen and PH levels in the water, which are currently at the normal levels.”
