Historic pub loved by famous actors closes for major refurb

-

A POPULAR Warwickshire pub frequented by the likes of Sir Laurence Olivier, Dame Judi Dench (below) and Charles Dance, has closed for major refurbishment.

The Black Swan, better known as The Dirty Duck to locals in Stratford-upon-avon, closed on Friday (May

19) for an expensive six-figure makeover.

The Grade Ii-listed building, which began operating as a pub in the 18th century, is set to reopen in late June following work to renovate the interior and exterior facade, as well as the waterside terrace which overlooks the River Avon.

Celebrated as Stratford’s ‘real’ theatre pub, thanks to its proximity to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and its popularity with RSC actors over the decades, it is the only boozer in England to have a license under two names.

General manager Antony

Wadeson said: “The Dirty Duck is a place steeped in history and a cornerstone of the local community.

“The whole team are really excited to see the finished product after the refurbishment, and we can’t wait to welcome back customers both old and new to The Dirty Duck in June.”

A who’s who of thespians has stepped foot inside the watering hole after exiting the RSC stage.

The Greene King pub’s Actors Bar has been a haunt for Sir Laurence, Dame Judi and Mr Dance OBE as well as Dame Helen Mirren and Sir Ian Mckellen, whose signed poster adorns the restaurant walls.

To ensure the refurb protects and respects the pub’s rich theatrical history, Greene King has enlisted the expertise of consultant, writer, and pub historian Pete Brown. Mr Brown will advise on how to merge the historical and modern worlds.
