The cruellest end

A DEVASTATING, GUT-WRENCHING CONCLUSION – BUT OPTIMISM THAT GOOD TIMES LIE AHEAD

-

DEVASTATED - but there are big things ahead for the Sky Blues.

That was the feeling in Coventry on Sunday morning as the city came to terms with a devastating Championship play-off final lost in a nailbiting penalty shoot-out.

Fans and public figures from the city took to social media to speak of their heartbreak but also their pride in the team and what it has brought to Coventry.

People shared their pride at the team’s achievements immediately after the final penalty. And the Sky Blues will look to dust themselves off and look ahead to next season.

In a tweet shared by Coventry North West MP Taiwo Owatemi, the club said they were ‘heartbroken.’ They added: We overcame so much and took the season to the final kick. Thank you for your support. We will rise together.”

Ms Owatemi had shared a video wishing the team good luck in the play-off.

Zarah Sultana, MP for Coventry South, said she was ‘absolutely gutted’ at the result, describing penalties as a ‘cruel way to lose.’

And Craig Tracey, MP for Bedworth and North Warwickshire, said he had ‘so much respect’ for Coventry City. He added: “Disappointment shows how far the club has come - few games in getting anywhere near this position was so far out of reach. Great management team and sure big things are ahead.”

Fans echoed the sentiment. Writing on our Facebook page, Jac Mccarthy said: “There’s always next year!”

Jagdeep Singh Dahal agreed, adding: “This time next year we will be walking into the Premier League.”

Andy Hughes said Luton deserved the result but Coventry had played well. “Realistically Luton finished third in the table 10 points more than Cov, so deserve to go up in my opinion,” he said. “But I will also say I’ve been impressed with Coventry City, good luck next season.”
