For the first time in my life I don’t know who to vote for

- E. Grainger, By email.

I RECEIVED my voting card through the post last week for the local elections.

After picking it up and thinking about it I realised that come the general election, whenever that will be this year, for the first time in my life I have no idea who to vote for.

Like many people, due to the shambles of how the pandemic was handled by our government not to mention the struggling NHS and cost of living crisis and the lack of a strong, good opposition, I really don’t know where to put my X come voting day.

Question leads to a lesson to dog owners

AS I walked to my local post office, to send a parcel, a young woman spoke to me from behind.

She was in fact blind, and accompanied by her trusty guide dog.

I was asked to point her in the direction of the dog mess, left by her own pet.

She thanked me for helping, and promptly picked it up, using a polythene bag, and walked on.

It goes without saying, that if this admirable lady cleans up after her dog, then others should do the same.

We need real leaders ...time is short

DECADES of scientific endeavour have told us that we’re putting the world’s ecosystems and our own future in grave peril by releasing vast quantities of greenhouse gases by burning oil and gas that have been buried for up to 500 million years. CO2 levels are higher now than at any time in human civilization and rising more quickly each year.

Decades of human creativity and technical know-how have allowed us to develop many solutions to this problem. We can now reduce our energy requirements and replace fossil fuels with clean-energy alternatives.

Governments fund climate science because they want to know what will happen and, as a result, they have supported the development of wind and solar energy, heat pumps and more. So why are we failing?

Because we are acting far too slowly.

Do we really have such weak leaders that they allow selfish vested interests to count more than our future?

We desperately need some leadership, in politics and in business.

Leaders who can think beyond the next election or the next dividend payment. No more pointing fingers and saying it’s down to others. It’s on us all. Tell your MP, tell your councillor, tell your employer and tell your friends. Or will we squander the opportunity to avoid disaster on our watch?

Time is short.
