FIRE CREWS BATTLE BLAZE AT HISTORIC PUB

A FIERCE fire tore through a country pub on the outskirts of Coventry causing ‘substantial damage’.

The Cottage Inn in Fillongley has, in a statement issued on social media, confirmed the news.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service said that 50 per cent of the first floor and the roof of the building has been consumed by fire.

As a result, the pub, which dates back to the 18th century, with some parts thought to be over 300 years old, has suffered severe damage. In the statement issued by its owners, it says they are unclear when they can open again.

On the pub’s page on Facebook, a statement reads: “The Cottage Inn, Fillongley family would like to inform you that the pub will be shut for the foreseeable future due to fire.

“Whilst the family are safe we are all of course heartbroken. We thank you for your continued support at this difficult time. Luke, Ellie and the team x

On its website, the pub has confirmed: “We will update the website and our Facebook page when we have a re-opening date.”

It adds: “We have lost some of the contact details for future bookings so may not be able to contact you to cancel a future reservation.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and disruption this may cause and thank you for your understanding.”

At its height, Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service had three engines from Nuneaton and Coleshill as well as the turntable ladder and a water carrier at the scene.

The road around the pub was also closed.
