Crash

FABULOUS #4

-

Dear Lloyd,

Issue 4 of CRASH will always hold a soft spot in my increasingly retro heart as it was my very first issue purchased, back on a sunny Spring day in my local village newsagents. As a nine-year-old slowly moving away from Star Wars toys and into the fascinating world of home computers, it was this very issue of CRASH that was bought for me before I even knew which computer I would like to own, and a full six months before I received a rubber keyed 48K beauty for my tenth birthday (and Xmas!). That sealed the deal and set me on course for many years of happy computing.

Lots of retro fans will indeed have a similar story. Still, I’ve kept hold of all my CRASH issues, bought faithfully up to the early 1990s, and am still amused by the fact that in October 1984 I still held true to the reviews that most impressed me from Issue 4 and bought two of the top-rated games from that issue — Codemame Mat and (destined to become one of my all-time favourites)

Trashman. Well, my next-door neighbour fortunately already owned

Jet Set Willy! Very best wishes, Robin Kennedy

(9 in April 1984, 46 in July 2021).

Roger and the gang messed up the offices so bad in Ludlow, I often felt like the ‘Trashman’. I often said, “What now?” to Matt Uffindell — he looked at me as if I was daft!
