POWER BOOK III: RAISING KANAN

STARZPLAY, FROM 18 JULY

- Matthew Hurrell

This new show is the second of four planned spin-off series from cult gangster series Power. The ten-episode sprawling family saga is set in Jamaica, in the New York City borough of Queens, and focuses on the coming of age of Kanan Stark (Mekai Curtis), the mentor of Power’s Ghost and Tommy, who was gunned down in a hail of bullets in the penultimate series of that show. Kicking off in 1991, 15-year-old Kanan is the only child of Raquel “Raq” Thomas (The Hunger Games’ Patina Miller), a cocaine distributor who is gaining influence across the city with her network of dealers.

Echoing the original series, Raising Kanan explores themes of identity, violence and legacy. With a strong cast including Omar Epps (House), expect plenty of gritty action, family drama and plot twists – because, as fans of Power will know, nobody can be trusted and no one is who they seem to be. ★★★★
