TURNER & HOOCH

DISNEY+, STREAMING NOW

- Amber Connolly

Yes, your initial thoughts are correct – this new series is based on the 1989 Tom Hanks film of the same name. In fact, it’s a continuation of the loveable original as Josh Peck (of Drake & Josh fame) plays US Marshal Scott Turner, the son of Hanks’ Detective Scott Turner. In this fun buddy-cop adventure, Scott inherits a large, unruly dog named Hooch, and despite not being keen on the idea from the get-go, he soon realises that the French Mastiff may just be the partner he needs. Because together, alongside the rest of the Turner family, they discover that Scott’s father’s death may not have been accidental. The show also stars Carra Patterson (Straight Outta Compton) as Scott’s street-smart partner Jessica, Lyndsy Fonseca (How I Met Your Mother) as his dog-loving sister Laura, and Vanessa Lengies (Glee) as a trainer at the US Marshal K-9 facility, who agrees to teach Hooch some tricks. The first series of this family-friendly action-comedy makes its debut with a 12-episode run, with new episodes being released weekly. Fans of the classic film will either get a joyful dose of nostalgia while diving back into the world of Turner & Hooch, or they’ll constantly compare the two versions, particularly paying attention to the notable absence of Hanks. But whatever your opinion of reviving old favourites into a serialised form, one thing is for certain – Hooch is completely adorable. Props to the five pooches who play him. ★★★
