Bid to keep marquee

-

AN application submitted to the council’s planning department seeks to extend the stay of the marquee at Sorn Castle.

The marquee was originally created in 2016, with a retrospective application made in 2019, and an extension also approved in 2022.

The marquee has become a main feature of the awardwinning venue, offering wonderful views of the surrounding land.

Supporting information with the original application from Farquhar Geddes Architects detailed part of the history of the venue.

It said: “The property is constructed of pink sandstone and comprises an original keep at the south west corner which is thought to date from the 14th century with subsequent additions and remodelling carried out in 1793 and 1864 (David Bryce).

“The porte cochere was added in 1907 involving substantial alterations to adjacent ground levels with the former ground floor becoming the current basement.

“Further remodelling of the interior was carried out in 1908-09 (H.E. Clifford).”

The document added:

“The property has been in the ownership of the McIntyre family since 1907 and remains in use as a family residence as well as being available for hire for exclusive private functions and weddings.

“The marquee was erected in June 2016 and was previously located to the north, immediately in front of the castle.

“It was subsequently dismantled and relocated to the south west of the castle as this location allows direct access to the castle basement for servicing and operational purposes”.

A determination deadline for the applied extension has been set for Sunday, May 12.
