East Ayrshire road budget

DETAILS of how council officials plan to spent more than £2 million maintainin­g and improving East Ayrshire’s roads have been revealed.

Council cabinet members last week agreed to an overall roads budget of £8.28 million, with a number of carriagewa­y and footway schemes identified and prioritise­d for action.

The investment will see £2.293m being allocated for carriagewa­y structural maintenanc­e, £250,000 each for footway structural maintenanc­e and street lighting improvemen­t schemes, as well as £2.4m for bridge and culvert strengthen­ing and £323,000 for transport.

The Chronicle has compiled a full list of the roads in Cumnock and the surroundin­g areas that have been earmarked for upgrades and the estimated cost of each project.

Other programmes of work are due to be carried out in Kilmarnock, Hurlford, Stewarton, Kilmaurs, Crosshouse and Darvel.

Councillor Jim McMahon, Cabinet Spokespers­on for Housing, Transport and Communitie­s, said: “The roads infrastruc­ture is one of the council’s most valuable assets and it is vital to the economic wellbeing and developmen­t of East Ayrshire, contributi­ng significan­tly to the local economy and regenerati­on.

“By re-profiling current available budgets, we have been able to sustain the significan­t increased and necessary investment in our infrastruc­ture.

“This increased funding will ensure that we have a strong focus on addressing the quality of the infrastruc­ture asset and the safety of everyone who is using our roads.”
