Specialized Turbo Tero

With future-proof tech, bags of refinement and plenty of power, the Turbo Tero has a lot to recommend it

-

Specialized’s Turbo Tero is new in its 2022 range and is described as “an electric mountain bike equipped for everyday rides; a mountain bike that you can commute on; a commuter you can take touring; a touring bike that you can haul freight with.”

The Tero slots into Specialized’s Full Power range of models, which use mid- drives produced in collaboration with Brose. These motor systems are distinct from Specialized e- bikes designated as SL (superlight), which use a smaller and lighter (though also less powerful) mid- drive developed in cooperation with Mahle but used exclusively by Specialized.

The Tero range comes in 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 variants, the main difference between them being motor power and battery size – the torque and capacity rising along with the model number. The range also offers a step-through frame option for the 3.0 and 4.0 models, while the 4.0EQ comes with lights, mudguards, rack and a kickstand.

The new range also serves to highlight the progress Specialized is making to refine its e- bike tech to deliver a smoother, smarter and more practical ride. All Tero models feature the new sleek, colour- customisable Mastermind handlebar display that can be personalised via the Mission Control phone app to make the info you see as simple or as data- rich as you like. You can now benefit form a ‘pedal pace’ bar that shows a rider’s efficiency from red to green, helping you adjust your pedal speed to keep the bar green for maximum efficiency and range. There is also the ability to alter power profiles, and a ‘ Turbo System Lock’ that can be used to disable your bike’s motor and activate the motion sensor alarm. Once locked, the motor cannot be enabled again except by the owner.

Opt for one of the EQ models and it will come with Drytech Fenders, front and rear LED lights and a 27kg- capacity rear rack compatible with child bike seats, while the bike is rated to pull a thru- axle trailer.
