Eskute Wayfarer

Incredible value for money, with far fewer spec compromises than you’d expect for this kind of outlay

-

There aren’t many e- bikes around for £999, let alone fully equipped ones like the Eskute Wayfarer. It packs hard-wired lights, sturdy pannier rack, full mudguards, front suspension and electronic horn alongside an ever- reliable Bafang rear hub motor and 360Wh frame integrated battery.

The Wayfarer is clearly designed to be easy to use and comfortable thanks to its low- step frame, plush saddle and adjustable handlebar stem. The spec is of course on the budget end – you wouldn’t expect anything else at this price – but features wellrespected names, from the Bafang rear hub motor to the Shimano derailleur gearing.

Perhaps less well known are the Zoombranded cable- operated disc brakes, with independent reviews suggesting the rear brake in particular isn’t that effective on new bikes and needs bedding in. The efficiency and hill- climbing ability of the motor system are more widely praised, despite its undoubted budget credentials (such as its basic cadence sensing, for instance).

One nice feature is the ability to program the number of assist levels and how much assistance each gives. The clear LCD display also helpfully shows the number of watts you are consuming at any given time – useful if you are looking to maximise battery range given that capacity gauges on such budget bikes are often not that accurate.

The firm’s parent company is based in Shenzhen, China but has a factory in Poland where bikes available in the UK are made. The company also has warehouses in Poland (EU shipping) and a UK warehouse (5-10 days delivery time in the UK by Hermes carrier). It’s also good to see a two-year guarantee on the battery and motor on the Eskute website.
