THE BIG QUESTION

In your opinion, who is the most stylish cyclist of all time, and why?

-

No-brainer. It has to be one-day specialist and multiple Monument winner Michele Bartoli. This man did flat back, slammed-stem-aero long before aero became the big thing!

Andrew Hill

Marco Pantani. He effortlessly destroyed the opposition, while climbing on the drops. Try it... it’s harder than you think.

Mark Herring

Mark Cavendish for the many years of enjoyment that he has given to me and the sport.

Lorna Welsh

My brother says it’s me, but I would always say Sir Wiggo, as he always looks the part, on or off the bike.

Andy Miller

Zak Carr. Anyone who saw him on a bike would agree.

Paul Oz

Eddy Merckx for the sideburns, Johan Museeuw for the backwards cap and Worlds jersey combo.

Stewart Watters

Bernard Hinault. I’m not a fan but he was a cool, mean-looking dude.

Mat Croft

Fausto Coppi. He was Italian. Surely that’s enough. Oh, and he rode stylish celeste-coloured bikes and rocked the sunglasses look.

Chris Wallace

Beryl Burton. Her riding style was flawless; it was as though she had become part of her bike. A pleasure to watch her in action. Even after 11 hours of a 12-hour time trial she maintained a composure that made it look as though she had just started the event.

Alastair Smith

If you are talking about form on the bike, Stephen Roche. If you are talking about flamboyance, I guess the Lion King, Mario Cipollini.

John Latona

Malcolm Elliott. Stylish and cool on the bike. Great rider too!

Malcolm Trueman

Obviously tempted to say me, but the ironic tone doesn’t translate into text... Andy Schleck for me.

Paul Gagan

Peter Sagan hands down! Ain’t nobody got tricks like him.

Paul Zorovich

Tom Boonen. It shouldn’t be possible to look that cool riding over cobbles. And he’s hard as nails.

Dean Evans

By some margin, it’s Jacques Anquetil. Adam Atkins

Well, as ‘style’ must mean an excellent position, which makes it look like the rider is achieving speed so easily, we must include top time triallist Eddie Adkins as he was aerodynamic before we really knew the true meaning of the word.

Geoff Orange

Mario Cipollini. He’s Italian, with big muscles, good-looking, and stylish on and off the bicycle.
