Côtes D’armor Marie Morin Véranda Rideau, Brittany, France

-

Same team again? Yes, I’m with Côtes D’armor for the second successive season. The year before I was racing in the South of France. I stayed here for a mix of comfort and familiarity — I know the riders, sports directors and mechanics — but also because this year there will be opportunities for more leadership within the team. That’s important for me. What’s the team like? This year, we’re quite a young team and there’s an increased focus on youth development. There are also a few older guys whose only focus is winning races. It’s a nice mix to have. Fellow Brits Owen James and Lewis Bulley race for the same team and though my French is quite good, being able to talk in my native language makes such a big difference, especially after long stage races. Does the racing suit you? I’d say so. Some races are hilly, some are flat and some have crosswinds. It’s a great variety and better than doing the same type of races all the time, which can get boring. How was the first race of the season? I began my season on February 10 with the six-stage Circuit des Plages Vendéennes and I finished fourth on stage one. I struggle with my iron levels in January so I told my DS not to expect anything from me, and that I was happy doing a job for the team, so that result was a welcome surprise.

Season goals? The first half — especially April — is really important, with the Brittany Classics, start of the Coupe de France, Paris-tours and U23 Liège-bastogneliège. The aim is to get more experienced, develop my knowledge, and focus more on getting results.
