Compliments to Cooke

Cycling Weekly - - WHAT YOU’RE SAYING | LETTER OF THE WEEK -

I read the article ‘The Other Tour’ (CW August 2) and was surprised no mention was made of Nicole Cooke’s win in the 2006 edition of the Grande Boucle Féminine Internationale. She was in yellow as the riders tackled the stage over Mont Ventoux. In a dominant display she attacked on the lower slopes à la Eddy Merckx and crossed the summit alone with a lead of three minutes.

As a junior she took multiple world titles while in 2002 she won Commonwealth gold, the Maglia Rose (ladies Giro) in 2004 and in 2007 repeated her win in the women’s Tour.

In 2008 Cooke won the Olympic road race and later that year became world champion on the road. She was the first rider male or female to take both titles in the same year.

Surely it is the time to look back to the achievement of another Welsh rider and give your readers an insight into the career of one of Britain’s most successful riders. Geoff Ericson, email
