If the fea­ture on page 22 has in­spired you to find out more about Alf ‘The King’ Engers, a new bi­og­ra­phy of the first man to break the 30mph bar­rier has just been pub­lished to co­in­cide with the 40th an­niver­sary of the fa­mous ride.

With his bad­boy im­age and rockstar looks, Engers was both hero and vil­lain of Bri­tish cy­cling. With his patho­log­i­cal dis­like of au­thor­ity — the ‘blaz­ers’ of the RTTC whom he took a mor­bid de­light in up­set­ting — and his flam­boy­ant style on and off the bike, he dom­i­nated the do­mes­tic scene from the 1950s through to the late 1970s.
