Coach John Hampshire has been work­ing with Jenny Gra­ham since 2016, and helped her pre­pare for her record­break­ing cir­cum­nav­i­ga­tion

“When Jenny came up with the idea of rid­ing round the world, I thought, that is quite a chal­lenge! But we broke it down and it be­came clear that she was in the [fit­ness] ball­park to have a good go at it.

“It is re­ally a case of be­ing able to ride at a cer­tain pace and not get overly tired. To ride round the world, you can’t af­ford to in­crease your lev­els of fa­tigue too much. Af­ter the first few weeks, you reach a con­stant state of fa­tigue that you have to keep rid­ing through.

“I thought it would be about coach­ing the phys­i­cal abil­ity, but what I found is how much the time spent talk­ing about lo­gis­tics and prob­lem man­age­ment gives con­fi­dence. We cre­ated strate­gies for how to deal with un­ex­pected prob­lems, which are in­evitable over sev­eral months. Jenny seems to have an abil­ity to take a step back and deal with dif­fi­cult sit­u­a­tions and get through them.”
